It is increasingly recognised that to prepare students to become effective participants in the rapidly changing 21st century society, schools must not only equip them with the necessary skills and the learning dispositions, but also the ability to manage and influence change.
The CP will help students:
- to develop a range of broad work-related competencies and deepen their understanding in general areas of knowledge
- to develop flexible strategies for knowledge acquisition and enhancement in varied contexts
- to prepare for effective participation in the changing world of work
- to foster attitudes and habits of mind that allow them to become true lifelong learners willing to consider new perspectives
- to get involved in learning that develops the capacity and will to make a positive difference
Career-related Study
For the vocational elements of the CP at ABS we have chosen Pearson BTEC.
BTEC stands for 'Business and Technology Education Council', which used to run the award, first introduced in 1984. BTECs are taken in more than 100 countries at all levels, from pre-GCSE to Degree equivalent.
They are vocational and work-related courses, designed to accommodate the needs of employers and allow students to progress to further and higher education. A BTEC takes a practical approach to learning, without missing any of the important theory on the subject.
BTECs are extremely reputable, having been around for 25 years now, and they are recognised by a wide range of industries and universities. Figures based on research revealed in January 2011 by the UK Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) show that:

- more than 100,000 BTEC students apply to Higher Education and make the university grade
- in 2011, admissions to UK universities for BTEC students had risen 30% year on year
- 95% of Higher Education institutions accept BTEC students, including Russell Group universities
- More than 50% of 20-30-year-olds going on to Higher Education are BTEC students.
CP - Creative Media Production pathway
The BTEC Creative Media Production (CMP) element of the CP is a very practical course ideally suited to students who want hands-on experience of production work in the media rather than consistently writing essays or taking exams.
Throughout the course you will gain an understanding of media and research techniques, find out about production management, pre-production techniques and video technology. You will also take specialist units looking at video editing, documentary production, PR and Marketing and more. This course has no exams and your work will be assessed throughout the course. You will be given a grade for each unit – Pass, Merit and Distinction and these will be used alongside your work in the CP Core to calculate your final grade.
This is an ideal course to lead onto a degree course in Media Technology/Production, along with other Media based courses. CP CMP is ideal for you if you enjoy being creative, you enjoy working as part of a team, you are motivated to research and produce products yourself and especially if you would like to work within the television or film industry. There are no prior skills or knowledge needed to join the course, just enthusiasm for film and television production, a good understanding of computer technology and a creative way of thinking.
For more information about what's covered during the course, please see the Creative Media Production info page.
